City Council Speech from 10/7/2013 I have a feeling that perhaps my motives have been misunderstood. I want to clearly state for the record that I am not anti-city council, anti-mayor, or anti-Campbellsville. I am very pro-Campbellsville. Everyone in this room I believe has this very important thing in common. And, I want to personally thank the mayor and city council for not raising the property tax rates as you could have last month. I actually grew up in a small city in Oklahoma, much like Campbellsville. We have a Baptist college in the middle of town with rich roots in Christian conservative values. When I moved 12.5 hours away from Oklahoma in 2005, it honestly felt as though home was not far away. It was almost as if I hadn’t even moved. I see what this city has to offer – tourist attractions such as Civil War battlegrounds, Green River Lake state park, a conservative university that is attractive to many people, both domestically and abroad, and our geography is far enough away from major economic cities that our economy does not have to suffer on account of them, but rather we could be the proverbial beacon on a hill where surrounding counties and cities see us as a weekend destination. We could encourage businesses to see us as a great place to relocate or to start up. We may differ on what is best for this city, but I passionately believe it is rooted in a conservative approach to economics. With that said, I have done some research over the last 3 completed fiscal years and have discovered deficits in each of them (in 2011 -$169,248.74, in 2012 -$460,352.86 without considering the $1.584 million loan as income, and in 2013 - $111,702.07). Our city park and pool has lost money each of the last three years to the tune of $167,006.06. It has also appeared that there have been loans in 2011 for $1.584 million, in 2012 $1.65 million, and most recently $1.5 million totaling $4,734,000 in loans combined with over $740,000 in deficits in the last 3 years. So, my first question is, are my figures correct? Secondly, would privatizing the city pool and park be something to consider? And thirdly, what policies are in place to help alleviate the downward pressure of debt on the taxpayers? Thank you for your time.
