City Financier Jon Moulton sacked 2,727 of his staff on Christmas Day after deciding to put City Link into administration, but didnt bother to tell his employees, leaving them to find out via the press. city-link.co.uk/ownerdrivers/ But still advertising for contractors (rather than employees with rights), having recently assured existing contractors that plans for the future were well in hand... They continued to work, having been asked to pay for a new uniform and lease new liveried vans, and even being encouraged to take financing and insurance out via City Link, but are now unlikely to receive their dues... Any redundancy payments are likely to be met by the taxpayer. (Moulton was a long-standing Conservative Party supporter – but with “varying degrees of conviction. Fundamentally, I don’t believe that the UK economy will do well until the public sector shrinks. Cuts are very painful, but you have to do them voluntarily or it will be forced down our throats in a crisis,” he says. He is not a fan of the UK staying in the European Union. He made a charity donation via former defence secretary Liam Fox to the Conservative party, and it later emerged that money from the charity had been used to fund the travels of Fox’s friend and Adam Werritty around the globe to discuss arms deals. He transferred his allegiance to UKIP after criticising Tory chancellor George Osborne for not cutting hard enough and for being too soft on austerity. Moulton says he likes to keep himself busy by walking with his wife, and has houses in Kent, Belgravia, France and Guernsey (the latter being the second of his dual tax residencies). His French property has its own vineyard producing varieties of wine including Moulton’s Recession Red.) And this is our new flexible economy? These are our Captains of Industry, our politicians paymasters... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Moulton on making people redundant: “You can never fire anyone too soon“ Moulton’s description of the people he has fired: “cutting away unnecessaries“ Moulton on why there should be even more austerity: “It’s the moral thing to do and it’s the right thing to do.“ Moulton on why there needs to be more cuts to public services such as the NHS: “I don’t believe that the UK economy will do well until the public sector shrinks.“ Moulton on how much he loved making companies bankrupt when he worked as an accountant: “Insolvency was great.” Moulton on his great love for Margaret Thatcher: “”Without Mrs Thatcher I probably would have stayed working in the US, watching the UK decay rapidly.“ Moulton on his approach to making a profit: “We come and make redundancies, close facilities, take the costs out of a P&L.“ Moulton on his first experiences of dealing with bankruptcies and redundancies: “Firing people, selling factories and stock. It was great fun.” ... And finally, when asked in an FT interview if he would he have done anything differently? “I would have liked – in a general sense – to have been loved more.” ft/cms/s/0/cb4f2326-8190-11e2-ae78-00144feabdc0.html tompride.wordpress/2014/12/26/meet-ebenezer-scrooge-2014-sacking-people-is-great-fun/
