City Librarys Film Festival 2013 Khao Yal Forest: Connecting Life November 13, 2013 3:43-3:53 p.m. Synopsis Tropical forests, which used to cover 50% of Thailand’s area five decades ago, presently have decreased to one-fourth their former size due to overcutting. However, the forest of Khao Yai located northeast of Bangkok survived thanks to Dr. Boonsong Lekakul, who fought through all processes to get Khao Yai designated as the first national park in Thailand. The park was designated as a World Natural Heritage in 2005 for its natural beauty and biodiversity. In May, the beginning of rainy season, the forest is rich with various kinds of fruits and living creatures and it’s an important period for hornbills, the largest bird in the canopy of the forest of Khao Yai. It is the time for the young hornbills to leave their nest cavities to join their parents and roam this extensive pristine forest. Featuring the forest at day break, the film takes a gentle and close look at living creatures, including trees, grasses, animals and insects, which are brought together by this ecosystem.
