City of Suffolk, Va Position Emergency Communications Operator Full Time Yes Pay Range 33503.00 - 52454.00/Year Primary Responsibilities Under general supervision, performs radio and communications work in the communications division of the City Police Department on an assigned shift. Work involves receiving all incoming calls to the Police Department, Fire Department, rescue services, and dispatching all emergency response personnel (i.e., Police, Fire, Public Works, Virginia Highway Department, etc.); and operating a computer terminal connected to the Virginia Criminal and the National Crime Information Center. Employee must exercise considerable tact and firmness in obtaining information from distressed persons. Employee must exercise independent judgement and initiative in receiving messages, responding to emergency situations, and dispatching calls. Reports to the Communications Supervisor. Applicant must be able to work shift work and may be assigned to any shift. The shift times are 7AM-3PM, 3PM-11PM, 11PM-7AM Position closes on August 23, 2013, at 5:00pm. If selected to proceed to the next selection phase, the CritiCallTM test, applicants will be contacted by the Police Department. Applicants must pass this pre-employment communications test in order to be considered for an interview. Minimum Physical Requirements Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery including various two-way radios and communications equipment; and office machines such as computers, calculators, copiers, etc. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met. Required Education Graduation from high school and some experience in clerical or communications work Required Job Experience Must undergo medical dispatch training. Certifications Required Must be able to obtain annual CPR Certification. Must hold or have the ability to obtain b9-annual state recertification with VCIN/NCIC (Note: to be eligible for VCIN certification you must be a US Citizen for at least the last 10 years and have lived in the US for the last 10 yrs) Other Qualifications If selected for an interview, applicants will be required to bring a typing test which reflects at least 35 WPM net speed. (Net speed is calculated at number of gross words per minute - number of errors)
