Claims that the entry for the Kirby Memorial Puppy Stake at Limerick was a trifle disappointing were certainly proved to be well off the mark as a series of scorching runs were turned in on Saturday night in the opening round. The honour of being fastest was claimed by Anna Gleeson’s Redwood Mick (Head Bound/ Moynevilla Baby) as he immediately took command and powered his way to a seven length margin over Ballymac Jarlath in 28.35 with Greenisle Legend a similar distance third. That time only gave him a two spots advantage on the clock over Paul Hennessy’s Jaytee Seville (Ace Hi Rumble/ Droopys Twirl) which only took it up on the fourth bend from Sidarian Blitz and went on to win by a length and a half from Sidarian in 28.37. Swithins Way was a staying two lengths third. We had to wait for the concluding Heat 11 for the next best run, a brilliantly executed 28.40 from the Brendan Matthews trained Boylesports Hero (Top Savings/ Cabra Midget). Early and back straight pace are the hallmarks of this flying tracker which led Laughil Blake before the first bend and moved into a sizeable lead down the back. Vulturi finished with his anticipated flourish but was still four lengths adrift of Boylesports at the line in 28.40 with Laughil Blake two and a half lengths third. VIKING’S FIFTH Another eye-catching run was the 28.50 from the Graham Holland trained Vans Viking (Vans Escalade/ Razldazl Lily) as he made it five wins from five starts with another authoritative performance in Heat 8. He just took the bend from Ballymac Tinsel but then stormed clear to win by six lengths from El Salvador with Kilara Hey Mac a neck third. There was also much to like about Liam Dowling’s Green Prince (Droopys Scolari/ Polar Floss) as he got away smartly in Heat 10 and led all the way for a three length margin over Whizzing Archie in 28.53 with Solvitas Ice two lengths third. Declan Byrne turned out the recent Champagne Club purchase Bubbly Gold (Hondo Black/ Spioraid Cath) to win Heat 9 on good style. This could have been a very good heat as Bubbly Gold led from the first bend and beat the impressive Jaytee Barzelona by two lengths in 28.54. Cashen Mickey Joe was five and a half lengths third. Vincent Toner travelled down from Newry with Jetson and the son of Crash and Ms Pepinstep impressed as he won Heat 2 in 28.62. Jetson, only third early, took it up at halfway from Belesker Pat and moved on nicely to win by four lengths and a neck from Crokers Champ and the strong finishing Jacks Ace. PRINCE PREVAILS One suspects we’ll be talking about the principals in Heat 3 for a fair while in this competition. Swords One set a strong gallop but Noel Hehir’s Ivy Hill Prince (Droopys Scolari/ Quam Celerrime) took it up around the bottom bends and won by a length and a half from the strong finishing Deanridge Pennys in 28.77. Swords One was another three lengths back. Heat 7 wasn’t the cleanest heat of the round but Gerry Holian’s Emers Superstar (Hondo Black/ Dublinhill Pride) showed impressive determination when taking it up on the third bend for a three length margin over the strong staying Barefoot Agent in 28.85. Dragon Doon was a length third. Only two of the heats were won in times slower than 29 seconds. One of these was Heat 5 where Padraig Davern’s Solvitas Thunder (Crash/ Mohane Patient) led from the opening bend when beating Prince Of Peace by three lengths in 29.06 with Jackal Frampton a length and a half third. The other heat was the sixth and here Pat Cocoman’s Afro Jack (Fatboyz Nodrog/ Hay Maker) lost his place early but came through to take it up again around the bottom on his way to a three length margin over Redwood Miller in 29.33 with Paradise Madrid a half length third. Full second round draw in Racing Events.
