Clares bid to retain Liam McCarthy has to come to an end. In a pulsating game in Wexford Park, the Banner came out on the wrong side of a 2-25 to 2-22 scoreline. Clare lost Brendan Bugler to a straight red card on 33 minutes but still led at the break by 1-05 to 0-06, with Darach Honans goal the big score of the half. The second half was a real tit for tat affair, with the sides trading scores at will. Tony Kelly and Conor McGrath put three points between the sides after 46 minutes, but then came another blow. Clare were reduced to 13 men when Jack Browne received his marching orders for a second yellow card. John Conlon, who was outstanding throughout, goaled for Clare moments later, but Conor McDonald replied in kind for Wexford. The home side led by 1-18 to 2-13 as injury time approached, but Colin Ryan nailed two crucial late placed balls to bring the game to extra time. A Harry Kehoe goal for Wexford in the opening period gave them an advantage that they never let go of, and they closed the game out to win by 2-25 to 2-22. For Clare, its the disappointment of losing their All Ireland crown coupled with the pride of an incredible performance.
