Cleanup continues from last weeks fire at Port of Los Angeles Cleanup efforts continued over the weekend at the Port of Los Angeles to remove wood fragments and timbers that were scattered into the water in the Sept 22 fire at the Pasha breakbulk terminal. The effort is expected to last for weeks. The fire, which started when a welding accident ignited old creosote-treated timbers, spewed toxic gasses and smoke into the air, shutting down container terminals the Port of Los Angeles, and three terminals in neighboring Long Beach during the day day shift on Tuesday. Container terminals at both ports have been operating normally since workers returned to their jobs for the evening shift on Tuesday and the day shift on Wednesday. The incident did not significantly impact peak-season cargo-handling activities in the port complex. An article in today’s Los Angeles Times quoted Mike Christensen, the port’s deputy executive director of development, as saying, “It will be weeks before we get the bulk of this wood out of the harbor.” The Pasha terminal handles steel coils and other breakbulk cargoes. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Share JOC NEWS - SEPT 28 2014
