Cledith Clinton “Bill” Hicks, 87, of Evans, WV, passed away May 22, 2014, at his home following an extended illness. He was born May 4, 1927, in Boomer, WV, a son of the late Gilbert Edward and Beatrice (Rhodes) Hicks. His sons, Mark Bryon Hicks and Terry Grant Hicks, a daughter, Ruby Kathryn Hicks, brothers, Larry, Jack and Carl, and sister, Ina Lee Nutter, also preceded him in death. He was a United States Army veteran, a former coal miner and was formerly employed by Union Carbide. He was a retired cell operator from Kaiser Aluminum and was a member of the United Steelworkers Union, Local # 5668, Ravenswood. He was a former assistant scout master for Boy Scout Troop #33, Evans. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and was a member of the Ripley Tabernacle Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ruby Blanche (Dorsey) Hicks, sons and their wives, Dennis and Carol Hicks of Ripley, and Joe and Barbara Jean Hicks of Summersville, sister, Quanita Jane Hannigan of Evans, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Service will be 7 p.m., Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Casto Funeral Home Chapel, Evans, WV, with Pastor Jeff Keffer and Pastor Mike Elder officiating. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Committal service will be 2 p.m., Sunday, May 25, in Dorsey Cemetery, Drennen, WV. WILLIAM L. SEARLS, SR. William Lawrence Searls, Sr. 86, of Cottageville, WV, formerly of Hurricane, passed away May 21, 2014, at his home. He was born August 29, 1927, in Hurricane, WV, a son of the late John and Anne (Wallace) Searls. His wife, Mary Searls, son, Joseph Searls, and nine brothers and sisters preceded him in death. He was a United States Army National Guard veteran, was a retired machinist from Special Metals, in Huntington, and was a member of United Steelworkers Union, Local #40, Guyandotte, WV. He was also an electrician, a mechanic, and a carpenter. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working. Survivors include his son and his wife, William L. Searls, Jr. and Robin of Hurricane, WV; daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Terry Gribben of Cottageville; grandchildren, Pat (Jill) Searls of Mountain Home, ID, Haley Searls and Parker Searls of Hurricane, Joseph (Kim) Grit, of Pt. Pleasant, Laura Jividen of Charleston, and Elizabeth Preece of St. Albans, 8 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. Graveside service will be 3 p.m., Friday, May 23, 2014, at Cherry Grove Cemetery, Cottageville, with the Rev. Gerald B. Sayre officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. West, Charleston, WV 25387-2536. PATRICIA SOMERVILLE Patricia Louise (Balis) Somerville, 79, of Sandyville, WV, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 20, 2014. Born August 2, 1934, she was the youngest child of Peter Earl and Emeline Margaret (Smith) Balis. Her siblings, Luther Balis, Nolia Millet, Ralph Balis, George Balis, Earl Balis, Eleanore Balis, Norma Balis, Paul Balis, and Frank Balis, and son-in-law, Tommy E. Vanscoy also preceded her in death. She was a 1953 graduate of Ravenswood High School, and married Hiram Somerville on June 23, 1953. As a homemaker who cherished her husband, children, and grandchildren, Patricia loved cooking and music. Her favorite hymn was “In the Garden”, and now she may “tarry there” for eternity. Patricia is survived by her husband of 60 years, Hiram O. “Sam” Somerville of Sandyville; sons, Larry E. Somerville and Jacob H. Somerville, both of Sandyville, and Samuel W. Somerville of Point Pleasant; daughter, Susan Vanscoy of Ravenswood; sister, Beulah Cottrill of Salem; seven grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2014, at Casto Funeral Home Chapel, Ravenswood, WV, with the Rev. Don Balis officiating. Burial will follow in the Independence Cemetery, Sandyville. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of service on Friday, at the funeral home.
