Cliff top airlift after caving accident A woman was airlifted to hospital after being injured while exploring a popular cave system near Crickhowell, on Tuesday. (Sept 17). The 51-year-old, from Wiltshire, and her daughter had been visiting the caves with a group when she suffered a back injury. The group had been exploring the caves on Llangattock hillside, an area popular with cavers from all over Britain. She was brought to the surface by group members who then called for help. Longtown, Brecon, Central and Western Beacons Mountain Rescue Teams attended and prepared to stretcher the woman to safety. Luke Lewis, deputy team leader, from Abergavenny-based Longtown MRT, said: “We needed a good number of members as initially the cloud was too low for a helicopter to reach her and she was almost a mile from the nearest road across difficult terrain. “Fortunately the cloud lifted and RAF Rescue 169 Search and Rescue, from RAF Chivenor, was able to come in.” An RAF paramedic was winched down to the woman and treated her with the help of mountain rescue team members. She was transferred to a stretcher and winched aboard. She was flown by the RAF Sea King helicopter to the University of Wales Hospital, in Cardiff. Duncan Forbes, from Brecon MRT, said: “This incident shows just how closely all the emergency services work together. It was thanks to the work of the mountain rescue teams, Welsh Ambulance Service and the RAF Search and Rescue crew that the injured woman was treated and evacuated so quickly
