Climate change: truth is out there Oct. 29, 2013, midnight I FIND it interesting at a time that bushfires are raging in NSW in October — and on the morning after a “tornado” hit Barnawartha — that The Border Mail editorial waxes lyrical about the dangers of living in the Blue Mountains and the community spirit of firefighters. No mention or association with the possibility of climate change. The only reference to climate change was located in letters to the editor. While I acknowledge that scientists don’t link individual disasters to climate change, it is possible the ferocity of both the fires and tornado were influenced by climate change. Given Tony Abbott wants to scrap the carbon tax and replace it with direct action, I would have thought it more appropriate that The Border Mail analyse the merits of the two different strategies as a tool in fighting global warming. Opponents of the carbon tax say it is too complex and just a great big tax with no effect, despite the reality being the opposite. The Border Mail has only ever produced one explanation to my knowledge, and that was mine, and unfortunately it was buried inside the paper within a supplement. Fortunately it can still be viewed at ecoportal.net.au/living-lightly/carbon-tax-explained. I urge readers to look at it before blithely accepting cries from Mr Abbott and “Environment” Minister Greg Hunt that it be scrapped. — GREG OATES, Huon Creek bordermail.au/story/1871861/climate-change-truth-is-out-there/?cs=14 Carbon Tax Explained | Ecoportal ecoportal.net.au I have chosen to write about Carbon Tax in Living Lightly as I see it as an attempt by our government to ensure we live more lightly, by reducing pollution that goes into the atmosphere, and thus look after the planet.
