#CloserLookUSM: Our de Grummond Collection is one of the largest repositories of children’s literature in North America, containing more than 100,000 published volumes and materials from more than 1,200 authors and illustrators. Among the early contributors were H.A. and Margret Rey, creators of the Curious George series. When Margret Rey died in 1996, she left to the de Grummond Collection a substantial portion of the couples literary archive, including original manuscripts and illustrations of the mischievous little monkey who delighted children around the world. The early works of Curious George were among the few possessions the Reys had smuggled out of Paris when they escaped to Lisbon by bicycle shortly before the Nazi occupation in 1940.
