Closet Clean-out For many people, cleaning out a closet comes with the spoken or unspoken fear that if something is dumped, you may find that you desperately need it a week later. Yet, if 50 percent of your closet is outdated and hasn’t seen the light of day in years, it’s time to give it away so you can see what you actually have to wear. Here’s some advice for tackling the chore: 1.Empty your closet completely. 2.While taking things out, sort your clothes into piles of tops, skirts, jackets, pants, and jeans. For your shoes, separate them by formal, everyday, work, exercise, etc. 3.Next, pull out your favorite pieces from each pile and start to coordinate different outfits. 4.Make sure every piece you love actually has something to wear with it. If not, put it in a separate pile. 5.Return to your piles and start sorting the clothes by what you wear and what you don’t. 6.If you haven’t worn something in a year, and don’t plan on wearing it for any special occasions, give it away. 7.Don’t feel attached to anything. If you wear something once in a while, keep it as long as you have something to wear with it. If not, give it away. 8.Make a pile of things that need to be sewn, need a button restored, or need to be ironed. 9.Once everything is sorted, return all the clothes that you’re keeping to the closet, sorting once more by type. Next, move on to shoes. Give away shoes that you haven’t worn in a while and put the ones you’re keeping back inside. At this point, your closet should be clean. Donate the things you’re getting rid of instead of throwing them out so others can benefit. Make sure to do this at least once a year, preferably twice. That wasn’t so hard now, was it?
