Clown is a word. Conveys whatever meaning one associates to the word. But all things clown seem to have some common ground in human being. It has to do with being IN the wave of reality, in all its real, raw, true, naive, magical, ineffable stupidity and folly. Comic acting is technique. Clowns use a wide range of techniques. Some use no performing technique at all but are just so. I prefer to look to the ground, the seed, the root, what combinations of nutrient, light, elements stimulate transformation, growth, flower, fruit, seed. It is cyclic. Certainly clown is not limited to the narrow history of the twentieth century and its entertainments. It touches something deep and primal in the universal human consciousness. Yes, sure, we can discuss the performers who are given label of clown within performance genres...but thankfully we are beginning to reconsider, that special primal essence, from which all these highly evolved and often specialized forms evolved and to which they all refer in some way.
