Co-ordination and fine motor is not automatic for someone on the spectrum. Body awareness comes naturally to a neurotypical kid, but more explicit teaching needs to be done for those on the spectrum. In a recent assessment done, I noticed that he had difficulty doing the actions for itsy bitsy spider. Looks simple .. And I dont know the OT jargon for this but to do the alternate actions - ie thumb index, thumb index is not easy for him. I asked him to practice, but when done repeatedly, his thumb kept touching his thumb instead of index. so to help him, I colour coded his fingers . He needs to make sure alternate colours are touching. With a few rounds of itsy bitsy with coloured duct tapes, he could now do correctly it without. Its not that they cant . we need to understand how they understand things, and give the the additional help. Visuals / markers are a great help , so it is our job to see the world how they see it too :) and it is quite a fun world too. ~April is Autism Awareness
