Coaches Comment Another very successful outcome today. Some sparkling performances. You all gave the spectators plenty to enjoy. I hope you players enjoyed yourselves on the pitch as well. When the two teams are so mis-matched, it can be difficult to keep to any semblance of a game plan. You can only play against the opposition that turn up. It is certainly not your fault that little resistance is being offered by the opposition. I was chatting with the ref in the pub after the game and he made the comment, At this level, players just want to turn up and have a run around. I let his comment go for the sake of politeness, but I really feel that the Mariners are aiming to take that step forward from a pub team mentality. I am sure you will post your opinions below. I have the impression that Mariners players want to enjoy playing cohesive rugby as a well drilled unit. Today, it was almost impossible to achieve that aim. In the first half, we had control at the set pieces and the backs were running miss man moves, loops and screens at will. There is no blame attributed, but inevitably, the second half lost its purpose and our formation was less obvious. I wanted us to maintain our game plan of podding blind off rucks to provide width for the backs to run their lines. Of course, this was never going to happen when the opposition were waving our runners through their rather soft defence. There were so many positives to take from todays play. Tom Crissel is just such a pleasure to work with. He is gifted, fast, unselfish and a true team player. Our back row is exceptional and Neil will add even more depth to our growing squad. We are gifted by having a core group of a dozen players who are committed to training and another dozen or so guest players who are outstandingly talented. We are now in a strong position to require our guest players to fit into our style of play. I hope you all agree. We have short, mid and longer term aims. Our short term aims are to win the match on the day with style, cohesion and with respect for the referee and opposition. Our mid term aim is to be successful in our league. Our longer term aims include the new Pavilion, and playing rugby at the next level. All through these aims, we will remain a friendly club where visiting teams enjoy our hospitality. Are you in sync with me?
