“Coffee” in Vietnam only 10% coffee dtinews.vn | May 31, 2011 03:12 PM Many types of coffee sold in Vietnam are made up of 90% other ingredients, including corn, soy and even toxic chemicals, said one industry vet. According to Mr. Nguyen T.C., a senior-level worker in the coffee business in Dong Nai Province, the methods of coffee processing have changed drastically in the last decades. “In the 80’s,” he said, “most processors added about 10% corn flour during production. However, the later use of soybeans decreased the amount of real coffee in the product that was sold to outlets. Now soybeans and corn make up 90% of what is sold as ‘coffee’.” Dong Nai is home to coffee processors that sell to the domestic market and to neighbouring countries such as Cambodia. The brands which come from these facilities do not have trademarks, but are sold in bulk under labels such as X.L, H.K, D.N, T.D. Mr. C said that he’s received job offers from a number of firms both in Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh City. However, after discovering their practices, he turned these jobs down. Now the price for a kilogramme of raw coffee beans is usually somewhere between VND50,000 (USD2.42) and VND55,000 (USD2.66). Instant coffee is just a bit higher, ranging from VND55,000 to VND60,000 (USD2.91) per kilogramme. Mr. C. said that if the real price of raw coffee beans, grinding, drying packaging and so on, are taken into account, the price of ground coffee should be double what it is. Toxic processing This is not just a matter of fraud. In order to pass corn and soy off as coffee, these products must be roasted until they are burned and also mixed with a number of potentially harmful flavouring agents. The amount and types of chemicals used depends on how the end product will be sold. According to Mr. C., “A lot of soy will create a more bitter tasting coffee. A wide range of chemicals are used to provide flavour and fragrance. These include industrial dyes and flavouring agents, such as saccharine, vanilla and artificial butter.” dtinews.vn/en/news/024/12261/-coffee--in-vietnam-only-10--coffee.html Hình theo thứ tự trái qua phải: 1.Roasted corn and soy make up most of ‘coffee’ 2.Corn is ground and mixed with chemicals 3.The corn, soy, flavour mixture
