Cognitive dissonance as a result of Religious thought -Biblical Aspects cognition - ones perception and learning and reasoning dissonance - a conflict of peoples opinions or actions or characters, not in accord, lacking in harmony Cognitive dissonance In psychology, is when excessive mental stress and discomfort is experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values at the same time. Leon Festingers Theory of cognitive dissonance focuses on how humans strive for internal consistency. When inconsistency (dissonance) is experienced, individuals largely become psychologically distressed. His basic hypotheses are listed below: 1. The existence of dissonance, being psychologically uncomfortable, will motivate the person to try to reduce the dissonance and achieve consonance 2. When dissonance is present, in addition to trying to reduce it, the person will actively avoid situations and information which would likely increase the dissonance The reason i always say religion is the root problem in the world is because it creates cognitive dissonance in the mind For example; Old Testament Malachi 3:6 (KJV) For I am the Lord, I CHANGE NO; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. (the Lord God does not Change!) Isaiah 43:11 (KJV) I, even I, am the Lord; and BESIDE ME THERE IS NO SAVIOUR Isaiah 45:21 (KJV) Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the Lord? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is NONE BESIDE ME (no god and a saviour other than him) Hosea 13:4 Yet I am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for THERE IS NO SAVIOUR BESIDE ME. Now in the New Testament it says; Luke 2:11 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David A SAVIOUR, WHICH IS CHRIST THE LORD. John 4:42 (KJV) And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying:for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the CHRIST, THE SAVIOUR OF THE WORLD Now:.... The Lord God does not Change... Yet; 1. The Lord God is the ONLY Saviour, none beside him 2. Christ jesus IS THE Saviour of the world who sits at the right hand of god (Matt 26:64, Mark 14:62, Mark 16:19......(KJV) These are 2 different beliefs, 2 different values and 2 different ideologies... We can all agree that this is defined as a contradiction contradiction - opposition between two conflicting forces or ideas Because the individual has accepted the bible as true and gods word... Therefore the 2 conflicting statement are accepted as true and are gods words. This is Cognitive Dissonance. Now remember the 1st hypothesis above; Point 1 hypothesis: when dissonance is present person to try to reduce the dissonance and achieve consonance. This will be done by explaining away the fact by saying things like: Jesus and god are one in the same -Catholic and denoms We are under a new covenant and Jesus is our new saviour because he died for us and god sent his only begotten son..... -JW and various that was the Old Testament, Jesus wasnt born yet -General Christian etc, etc. Point 2 Hypothesis: When dissonance is present, in addition to trying to reduce it, the person will actively avoid situations and information . When you bring the information to a person who is cognitively dissonant.. that it was in fact the roman catholic church who convened councils to write the new testament to graft themselves into the older story so they could have THEIR OWN SAVIOUR so people would FOLLOW THEM.. Which is WHY the contradictions are in the bible..The person actively avoids the situation and information.. Most of the time they revert back to the first hypothesis.. Derailing & diverting the conversation (buck-dancing)... its a cycle. Cognitive dissonance has also been demonstrated to occur when people seek to: Explain inexplicable feelings: When a disaster occurs in a community, irrationally fearful rumors spread in nearby communities not involved in the disaster because of the need of those who are not threatened to justify their anxieties Reaffirming already held beliefs: Congeniality Bias (also referred to as Confirmation Bias) refers to how people read or access information that affirms their already established opinions, rather than referencing material that contradicts them. For example, a christian may read a historical document only to reaffirm their already held beliefs in the bible, neglected and ignoring the facts held within the said document that conflict with their own belief.. So information is interpreted to avoid dissonance in their own mind... In actuality they are adding to it.
