Col Truman W Crawford I was visiting my Mom this past weekend for the Hollidays. She showed me this writing that she found that my Dad had writing and asked me to post it for all to see. Merry Xmas.......Seasons Greetings...............These two phrases will be repeated literally millions, if not billions of times during this Xmas season. Did you ever stop to think about the significance of these Greetings and the reason for their use? They are harbingers of an Annual event Worlds biggest birthday party, which gets bigger each year. Whose birthday party???????????This may cause some of you to feel a bit uneasy, but lets be objective! I youre going to Celebrate the birthday, you might as well know whose it is........... One thousand nine hundred ninety five years ago, a baby was born who changed the course of history. As a matter of fact, the world actually measures its history by the birth of this baby!!!!! No ordinary baby was this, thought born in less than ordinary surroundings. Wouldnt you thinkthat a baby whose birth is the focal point of history would have been born in a palace or a castle......or at least a nice home??? Not so.....Jesus was born in a lowly, stinky stable. And....strange as it may seem, many who will Celebrate His Birthday will also object to the manger scene symbolizing His Birth!!! The latter is not the only paradox involved in the birth and the life of this unusual man. History records that soon after Jesus Birth, Herod, King of Judea, ruthlessly murdered all Jewish babies under the age of two. His purpose? To be sure that Jesus was put to Death!! Why should he want a certain helpless baby put to death badly enough to kill thousands?? Because he was no ordinary baby. His Wise Men had accurately told him that Jesus was the baby prophesied long before to be a King and that was a threat to Herods job security. Mass murder resulted, but Jesuss life was spared because His parents were warned by an angel and they fled to Egypt with him. Possibly the most surprising thing about the One whose birthday the world celebrates was his public life. Not the length of it, but the brevity of it. Not because he rose to any great position of authority....at least not by the worlds standards. He was not a political figure, though he certainly upset the political status quo of his day by what he said. Rather than being a powerful military leader, he was ultimately killed by the military. Neither was he a prominent church personality, though he did stir things up in the church of that day to the point where many times they even tried to kill him!!!! Jesus public life lasted just three years. In that short span he went all over his homeland teaching the principals of Love, Respect, Loyalty, Courage, Integrity. The list of qualities of success he taught could go on and on. At the same time, He healed people of blindness, lifelong ailments, lameness and even raised some from the dead. He assembled a group of twelve unlikely men who traveled around the country with him and spent much of their time arguing together while he tried to mold them into a functional team. After three short years he was betrayed by one of the twelve, captured without resistance, and then crucified on the cross and scoffed by the army, abandoned by his followers, and mourned by a small group of relatives and friends. This doesnt sound like a person whose birthday would subsequently and annually be celebrated by the world, does it!!! Yet, songs have been written about him, martyrs have died because of him, people are persecuted even today in some certain countries because of their faith in him, and even here in America, a country founded on the principals of religious freedom, controversy abounds because of him. Again this year there will be those who, while making plans to participate in his birthday celebration, will be protesting those public nativity scenes. It makes one wonder why they come to the Worlds Biggest Birthday Party which honors one who is the focal point of history, while wanting to remove any evidence of his birth. Possibly they dont know the Christ of Christmas, whose message is the same today as it was during his three years of public life....Peace, Hope, and Goodwill Amongst Men! This was writing by my Father, COL Truman W Crawford I am so proud of him in the past of what he did and now for what he still brings to the world. His son Robert Crawford
