Cold & Flu Cures 01 - Rest. When all is said and done, rest is one of the best things you can do for your body when you’re under the weather. Your immune system needs time to do its thing, and resting gives your body a chance to heal. It’s sometimes hard to take a day off from work to nurse yourself back to health, but a day or two of rest now can help cut down the duration of your illness and save you many days of discomfort. 02 - Oregon Grape Root. Oregon Grape is a valuable herb and has been helpful in purifying the blood and used extensively in herbal remedies for infections and to improve digestion and liver functions. It acts a bitter tonic to stimulate the flow of bile and intestinal secretions. Oregon grape extracts are often used for conditions such as jaundice, hepatitis, and general gastrointestinal dysfunction. It has also been used for symptoms of colds and flu, and has been shown to suppress the growth of disease-causing microbes. 03 - Echinacea. Echinacea is a flowering plant from the daisy family, and is found growing in open prairies and wooded areas. The Native Americans used it to treat a variety of medical conditions, including symptoms of the common cold, such as cough, headache and sore throat. Echinacea is also believed to boost the immune function and contain powerful antimicrobial properties useful for fighting infections and flu-related symptoms. The herb should not be taken for longer than two weeks, since the long term effects of Echinacea are yet to be determined. Before taking Echinacea, it is important to note that the herb is most effective when taken at the onset of infection. But if you already have a full-blown cold or flu, it will speed up healing and reduce the symptoms. If you feel a cold or flu coming on, take three to four millilitres of Echinacea in a liquid form or a 300mg tablet every two hours for the first day of the illness. From then on take it three times a day until you are well again. Then you reduce the dose to once a day to help the body stay well. You can take Echinacea once a day preventatively all year round to modulate the immune system. Echinacea taken as an organic fresh plant extract has shown to be most beneficial. Echinacea capsules contain the powdered root of the herb. If you feel a cold coming on, take a 500mg capsule three times a day. For throat infections, gargle with 5ml Echinacea tincture mixed into some warm water three times a day. Take Echinacea as immune regulator while the infection persists. Twenty to thirty Echinacea drops can be taken in a little water three to six times a day. For chronic infections, take half a teaspoon of the tincture three times a day. A tea made from one to two grams of the dried Echinacea can be taken three to six times a day during infection. 04 - Red Root. Red Root is an herb that has effective antibiotic, antispasmodic, antiviral, and expectorant properties. Red root is great for helping to prevent or shorten the duration of colds, flu, and respiratory infections. It has the ability to help remove phlegm and mucus from the respiratory tract and sinus passages. Red root also works well for digestive ailments such as constipation, gas, bloating, indigestion, and abdominal pain. 05 - Red Raspberry. Some herbs seem to show an affinity for a certain part of the body. This is the case with Red Raspberry. It seems to have been designed for the reproductive organs of the female in particular. It is known to help with everything from hormone imbalances, to strengthening, stimulating, toning and healing the entire reproductive system. It is wonderful for everything from puberty to menopause. Many women drink Red Raspberry Leaf Tea during their entire pregnancy finding it helps with everything from nausea to labor and delivery. While it boasts of being the queen herb for the female constitution it is also marvelous at conquering colds and flu as well as many other ailments among the human family. Being so rich in vitamins and minerals it is also heralded as a nutritive herb, a great source of healing to all. It contains Vitamins A, B1, B3, C, D, E, and Linoleic Acid as well as the minerals of calcium, iron, potassium, manganese, and phosphorus. For maximum healing benefits, drink anywhere from 1 cup to 1 quart of Red Raspberry Leaf Tea a day. Mix it in with your favorite juice or fruity herbal tea for a refreshing cool drink or drink it warm mixed equally with peppermint tea if you don’t care for the flavor by itself. Mixing it with juice and freezing it in popsicle molds is great for small children when they have sore throats or colds coming on. Abstaining from food, and drinking only Red Raspberry Leaf Tea when a cold first presents itself will usually eliminate all symptoms within 24-48 hours. Home Remedies. 01 - Cinnamon, clove, black pepper, sweet violet tea. Cinnamon, Clove, Black pepper, Sweet Violet Tea: Another effective remedy for common cold and flu. Add one small stick of cinnamon, 2-3 cloves, 3-4 black pepper, and one dried sweet violet flower ( also known as Parma violets, Devon violet, Blue violet, English violet, Sweet-scented violet) to a cup of water and boil it for 2-3 minutes. Take it 3-4 times a day, preferably hot, to cure common cold and flu. 02 - Olive leaf extract to get rid of common cold and flu. Olive Leaf Extract is another herbal antibiotic and antiviral that has shown amazing results in treating flu infections. 03 - Turmeric Smoothie to flight common cold. A great way to fight common cold symptoms it to enjoy this anti-oxidant rich turmeric smoothie: Add 2 heaped tbsp of Greek thick set yoghurt, 1 large peeled and chopped orange, 2 chopped carrots, 1/2 cup coconut water, and 1 scant tsp turmeric powder to a blender and whizz on high for a couple of minutes, if you are brave sprinkle with a turmeric topping and enjoy this every morning. 04 - Build immunity with herbs reishi, maitake mushrooms and astragalus. Immunity building herbs reishi, maitake mushrooms and astragalus are also recommended by Chinese doctors and practitioners for common cold and flu. You can find them at most super markets and health food stores. Comes in pills as well. Hot water with honey, lemon and cinnamon is another traditional remedy for Common Colds. Soothes throat and chest and stops mucus buildup. Drink a cup every 2 hours. 05 - Honey, ginger and cinnamon tea to get rid of common cold and flu. Add 1/2 cinnamon stick, one clove, one large cardamom, and four black peppers to a glass of water and let it simmer for 15 minutes. Now take it off the stove and add 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated ginger and a teaspoon of honey. Cover the tea and let it steep for another 5 minutes. Take this tea twice a day to get relief from cold and flu in a couple of days. 06 - Fight common cold and flu with honey and thymol (bishop’s weed/carom). Add a teaspoon of freshly roasted and powdered thymol to a teaspoon of hot honey and take it at night time, right before going to bed. Make sure you don’t eat or drink any thing for next 3-4 hours for best results. 07 - Common cold treatment with cumin seeds water. Cumin water is an antiseptic beverage and very useful to treat common cold and fever. To prepare cumin water, add a teaspoon of cumin seeds to boiling water and allow it to simmer for few seconds, and set aside to cool. If cold is associated with sore throat, add a few small pieces of dry ginger to the boiling water as well. It will soothe sore throat.
