Cold Start Issues !!! There are many reasons for a cold start problems in motorcycles and there are some ways to go around it. Engine oil is not the lone factor, its just one of them. I will try to list some of them wih solutions. Reasons : 1) The engine oil becomes thicker with the lowering of temperature and doesnt flow the way it should and creates internal resiatance in the engine. Smaller the engine more the effect. 2) Fuel : Petrol, Octane doesnt evaporate well when temperature is low. 3) If there is too much fog then the amount of oxygen required to burn the fuel becomes insufficient and this is where the carburettors fail and FI engines starts without a problem. 4) If your Carburettor setting is not correct, too lean or too rich your cold starts will give real problems to you. 5) Battery. Batteries also run into troubles with lowering temperature, in BD temperatures do not go that low but for the batteries to function properly and undergo the internal chemical reactions and provide desired voltage and current it needs to be at a certain temperature which is not too cold. 6) Dirty spark plug clogged with carbon. Keep your plugs clean. 7) Weak battery, keep your battery charged and refill water if required. Gel batteries works betterin cold conditions then acid batteries. Some Solutions : Note: All these factors go away once the engine becomes little warm and starts rolling for few minutes. 1) Use a lower viscosity oil. Where for example your engine needs XwY just change the lower index X to one or two grades lower. For example if your engine uses 20w40, then use 15w40 or 10w40. And synthetics flow better than mineral oils in cold temperatures. 2) Use CHOKE if yr engine is carburetted. Note: Only CHOKE AND KICKING, NO THROTTLE. What i do is i kick a few times with out powering the engine to flow the engine oil a bit and it gives the battery a wakeup wakeup call as well. Why kicking because the the self will not be efficient to start the engine properly and drain excessive current from the battery. If battery is not strong and well charged it might go bad as well. Holding the self for more than 5 seconds is not adviseable, the battery will drain out quickly. So use kick for starting your bike in the morning. For bikes which have no kick is surely equipped with a good battery so no worries there. I m trying to gather all the points here. Once bike runs for around 15 seconds release the choke else the engine will get flooded with petrol. If engine stops use the same method again. Keep the engine on idle rpm for few minutes and dont give throttle, let the engine oil flow properly and warm up. Once the engine warms up properly then you are good to go and throttle as you like. It is becoming too long... Anyway if the starting problem is too much and engine shuts down frequently then check you carburettor setting, it is either too lean or too rich. And yes your tight tappets could be a culprit too. Note : DO NOT THROTTLE YOUR ENGINE TOO MUCH IN COLD STARTS UNTIL THE ENGINE BECOMES WARM.
