College Application Essay- My wife and I recently moved from a very remote village in Alaska to San Francisco. The two years I spent in Petersburg, Alaska, were a reality check: a breathe of fresh air. The town was in many respects self-sustaining. Alaskans are experts at using their resources, yet I was intrigued by their grow opp tribulations. There was never enough produce within the community. The few community gardens and the green houses that existed never yielded any substantial food. Since this transfer back to the so-called “lower 48” I have been trying very hard to voluntarily separate from the U.S. Coast Guard and pursue a degree in horticulture. I am interested in the growing and maintaining of plants in non-perfect climates and in finding solutions to associated problems. I am recently married; with this change both new and old life aspirations have surfaced for both my wife and me. It has become obvious that education is essential in this recent assessment of our life goals together. If I can prove to my command that I am a worthy and accepted candidate for your horticulture program then I have a chance of being released to pursue this life goal of my new familys. My request has already been denied once. I have been counseled by both my command and third parties alike as to why I should carefully consider going forth with this request and should instead remain in the Coast Guard. My determination to remove myself from said blanket will carry on into my studies at Colorado State University. My dream is to return to Petersburg with the knowledge and tools needed to make a difference in the community. I understand the importance of exposure and how it can be used to influence others. I would like to provide the opportunity for schools get involved and raise interest for volunteers. Most importantly, I would like to provide a successful sustainable environment my family can flourish in. With my acceptance into Colorado State I truly believe I can change the lives of not only my family but a community I consider my home.
