College is a scam. There, I said it. Its a scam perpetuated by its alum, who discriminate based on this club membership mentality. Its why Harvard people hire Harvard grads, Stanford folks hire Stanford grads. And, its why colleges can perpetually jack up prices without suffering any of the market push back virtually any other businesses incur. Incomes go up single digits over the last decade, while college costs go up triple digits. College is a scam. Just like Social Security, Shovel Ready Jobs, Medicine, and virtual every part of our crony capitalist empire. Unfortunately, like all great scams, theres some small element of necessity in college: the learning of skills and information and quantification of those things. And, until theres a better way to qualify that a person has indeed mastered a skill and a net of knowledge, college will continue to force people to spend a mass of wealthy to allow their children access to the job market.
