Colorado became a state on August 1, 1876. Here are Amado Trujillo, Adelaido, Chavez, and Adolfo Chavez of Romeo, Colorado performing a blessing song, a type of song often used in Spanish American wedding celebrations. The tune, surprisingly, is The Irishmans Shanty. Spanish and Irish settlers lived in proximity to each other, and so this tune was borrowed. Recorded by Juan Rael in 1940. The first European settlers in Colorado were the Spanish, who settled in the Northern Rio Grande region in about 1600. Other European ethnic groups settled in the state after the region became part of the United States in 1848, with the majority migrating during the Colorado gold rush in 1858.
