#Colourism, also known as #shadeism, is a real issue in #SriLanka. Men (and/or their family) refuse to even consider marrying a dark-skinned woman- no matter how beautiful, intelligent, devout or accomplished she is. While many white tourists enjoy the beach, the Sri Lankan girls and women dont even bother enjoying the sun or venturing out to see the tea estates or view the waterfalls. Why? Because she will become dark(er). This is how society values women: as an accessory and label of someone else. The men say they are intimidated by a womans financial independence, career, intelligence, social & political participation. These men are afraid of the wrong things. Instead, I am, they should, fear and worry when women are denied education, fair work opportunities and representation & participation in the social and political sphere. Also, judging people purely on the basis of their skin colour or ethnicity is completely haram. If only colourism and shadeism was a crime as much as it was a sin! This is a system of oppression. Oppression is evil. If you see someone judging someone on such a way- stop them in any way you can. Our dark skin is the colour of our freedom and our freedom fighters. Our dark skin does not need to be enslaved. We should refuse to feel inferior and indignifed. The Divine made us like this. Dont let anyone- family, friends, coworkers and other members of the wider community tell us otherwise. I saw, in a pharmacy today, between the nuerofens and panadols, were skin-whitening products. My skin colour is not a disease. My darkness is my pride and dignity. Im not arrogant to say that when the world says, since I was small, that dark is ugly.
