Comedy is so frustrating because there are so many comics out there who have their eyes on a glittery prize. Thats not a bad thing, I think they get so blinded by it though that they are willing to do anything to get to that prize as fast as they can and that can be bad. They are out there yelling that they are on their hustle and haters hate them and they arent going to listen to anyone negative because they are going to make it. But these are the same ones saturating comedy with unoriginal jokes and borrowed material. This is always going to be a constant thing in comedy and Im fine with that. I know where I want to be and how Im going to get there. Ive been fortunate to have started with many great comics in the valley who have shared advice on the business, advice on jokes, advice on professionalism and plain just shared the love of comedy with me. Im truly grateful for that, it has helped me to be a better comedian and professional. My heart is broken though, like really lost a true love broken, because I saw my Jennifer Lopez joke done by someone else. Like even turned around and showed her ass like I do. Since she did it on a documentary and paid more dues than me, I feel I would be looked at as I was unoriginal if I continued to use it. That saddens me because that joke has been with me since the beginning when I started 14 years ago. I remember I used to even wear a bucket hat and sunglasses to look more J-Lo ish. :) Glad I stopped that early on! And to give credit where credit is due the punch line of saying I was J-Los body triple and doing the turn was added by Sean Dillingham. Back before he had his club and everyone hung out and talked. (Just to show how much dust that joke has on it.) This isnt the first time its happened and def not the last. But please comics I am telling you, you are doing a disservice to yourselves if you do not dig deeper and go for a more original joke. There are so many comedians that yes there will be topics touched on a billion times but you as a professional should look for the one way to make that topic new. Im not looking to be on every flyer out there, not trying to be on big stages to say I performed in front of x amount of people, Im not looking for the likes on my Facebook page. Im just looking to make comedy my main job. It is very disheartening to have to retire a joke that also gave me a tag in my ending joke. My set has been cut tremendously because of this. But I will continue to write and build and will have my set back on solid ground because Ive been complimented by the best in this biz and given many opportunities to not recognize that I may have a real flair for this and a lasting stay. But be warned, I am a Leo and I will get feisty if the laziness continues on your part and you do not give the effort that your craft deserves.
