Comfort Food In the home stretch of the Westchester FARE Food - TopicsExpress

Comfort Food In the home stretch of the Westchester FARE Food allergy walk, I thought I would write about my personal experience with food allergies. As a food allergic mom, there is no such thing as comfort food. Food is the stress. Most people eat when they grieve, when theyre sick, when theyre celebrating, bonding with family and friends or just because they are hungry. Moms of kids with severe food allergies are stressed or anxious during all of those times. There is no, oh no its 5 oclock whats for dinner? Dinner has to be planned as does every meal around the clock. You always have to be prepared, not only with emergency meds, but food and drink as well. On a recent trip to the shore, we were able to eat only one meal out safely, pizza! Which means staying at a hotel at the shore is not an option. So we rent a house. And while you are all packing beach toys and cute outfits, Im packing my toaster, frying pan, utensils, ladles, pasta pot and food food food. (No wonder we visited the nut free Fro Yo shop 4x on just one vacation. Only place safe have ice cream. We cant even use the cooking supplies already in the house due to the chance of cross contamination. Besides hives and eczema, thats how we had our first allergic reaction, cross contamination on vacation. It was 5 years ago, before I knew as much as I do now. Parties involve food, school involves food, almost everything involves food. (Now you can see how a tired mom who is cooking all the time and planning meals can easily burn her leg while cooking meatballs and end up in the burn unit for 10 days.). I live at Stop and Shop and the managers there all know me. Im even friends with the deli department. I have to call them in the morning and let them know Im coming and they save a clean machine for me. Many of you take for granted walking to any deli, cafe, restaurant or ice cream shop. These are not luxuries that food allergic families have. So with that said take a moment and make a donation for this important cause. Hopefully one day, my daughter wont have to read every label, feel left out, eat at a table away from her friends or be grouchy because shes hungry because she cant find anything safe to eat. I wont ask for your help to make food for us, too risky. So if you want to help, please make a simple donation to FARE in support of Emma! Thanks!
