Coming January 2015! Vintage Hungerford notecard reprints. Assateague Island National Seashore turns 50 this year and were reflecting on Assateagues rich history to commemorate the occasion. In the 1960s and 1970s, one of the remaining active homes on Assateague Island belonged to Mabel and Churchill Hungerford. Owners of a New Jersey based company that built custom water treatment systems, the Hungerfords commuted to their second home weekly. Each year Mrs. Hungerford would commission an artist to paint their Christmas card. Some cards showcased the couple’s pastimes such as hunting geese and collecting wildlife shaped driftwood, while others reflected current events. Assateague Island National Seashore was established in 1965. In celebration of the National Seashore’s 50th Birthday, Assateague Island Alliance is proud to reprint these vintage Christmas cards, revealing a part of Assateague Island’s rich history.
