Coming Monday starts Jain Shashwat Oli. This year it starts with Ashtami compared to Sapthami normally as there are two dasam tithis in Chaitra. Jain oli is observed twice a year in Indian months of Chaitra and Asoj. The Tapa( austerity) is for nine days. This is a secular ritual in which no specific God is prayed but human attributes. First day normally starts on Sapthmi during bright moon of chaitra or asoj. None days devotees take one time boiled food without any salt or spices. Those who observe strict austerity take just boiled rice or wheat or yellow gram or Moong or Black dhaall. The nine days are devoted to following nine attributes: Arihant ( Kewali who attained total enlightenment - Boiled white rice is taken), Sidha ( those souls who attained nirvana after becoming Kevali and ended the cycle of rebirths_ food is boiled Wheat), Acharya ( Leaders who teach the path of virtuous life- Food is boiled yellow dhall), Upadhya ( Preachers- food is boiled Moong) and Sadhus ( Monks- food is boiled Black gram). The rest four are Samyak Darshan, Gyan, charitra and Tapa ( food is boiled rice only for all four days)... Legend say that those who do these austerities for nine days obtain bliss. Also, its good for health especially to treat skin disease particularly Leprosy conditions.
