Coming home after two days of covering Hospice and Palliative Care - TopicsExpress

Coming home after two days of covering Hospice and Palliative Care as the lone medical provider, FNP (MDs deserve vacations, too :), I read this. I have worked many hours in two days not for an hourly wage or even a high salary--not my motivation (in a rural community), but for the passion, comfort and compassion that we bring to families and their loved ones. If you think of nursing as a way to get rich, you are right...but not monetarily. Their is no richness as great as holding the hand and comforting a 12 yo who was molested, helping a woman have the right to cry b/c her baby is in NICU and the other mothers have their children w/them, giving breath to a child who is dying, helping our elders make decisions about how they want the end of their life to be (giving them a say in the system) and just being present when someone needs a listening ear, asking what their concerns and fears are about.. I feel blessed to have been able to be present when life is born, life is taken & in b/t; it is a great honor to be a nurse and one of my favorite quotes sums it up...the essence of your presence is the most important gift to give when your loved ones are hurting or leaving this world for the next. Blessings to all my nurse friends &anyone who has received their tender loving care...I appreciate you all
