Coming up quickly is one of my favourite events of the year: the Vancouver Island Short Film Festival, with three showings over February 6th and 7th at VIU! The festival is rare in that it supports short films instead of typical long-form films; the lineup features about a dozen films, none more than a dozen minutes long. Not only are the films always amazing, but its a warm community that supports the festival every year--audience members, sponsors, local businesses, other arts organizations--and of course the filmmakers, writers, actors, techies, musicians, and more! In addition to the films, a Top Men concert follows the Friday screening; a Filmmaker Q&A follows the Saturday afternoon screening; and an award ceremony (and after party!) follows the Saturday night screening. Whether to show your support for arts and film in Nanaimo or just to have a fun evening or afternoon out at a ridiculously fair price, please throw one of the screenings onto your social calendar. It might sound cliche, but you will laugh, you will cry, you will wonder how did they do that, and youll be glad you went. Its why this event is at or near capacity every year, its why this event is going strong in its tenth year, its why Im proud to throw my support behind this celebration of film.
