Commemoration of World Mental Health Day on 10 October is aimed at creating public awareness to make issues related to mental health a global priority. Efforts are also aimed at attracting investment support to improve treatment of mental health conditions. As we all know, and as clearly illustrated in the Baseline Country Report on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, persons with psycho-social disabilities in South Africa remain extremely vulnerable to human rights violations, abuse, gender-based violence and exclusion. Persons with disabilities in general are also at high risk of mental health problems due to the additional stress factors placed on them as a result of exclusion, as well as attitudinal, physical and communication barriers they have to contend with and overcome every day of their lives.
