Commentary: The songwriter says ‘Just a closer walk with thee, grant it Jesus is my plea, daily walking close to thee. Let it be dear Lord, let it be’. We must acknowledge that we cannot make it on our own and that we constantly need the guidance and protection of the Lord and so we need to draw near to God. He is always calling us but many times we ignore the call and the clear signals to come closer to him. In the midst of our daily activities, we must identify a specific time to be close to Jesus – to read his word, to pray, to meditate on him, and to sing his praises. He is Lord. He is the source of our strength and without him we can do nothing. David says it was good for him to draw near to God and he explained that he had to stay close because he had put his trust in the Lord. David also outlines some simple ways in which we can draw near to God and to abide in his house. We need to walk uprightly, meaning we must live with honesty and integrity. We must do righteousness and speak the truth. Also our tongues must not be used to spread venom and destroy other people’s character. We should love our neighbours. We should keep our word. We should not seek to unjustly profit at the expense of others, especially the less fortunate. Let us take a critical look at our lifestyles and see where we stand? How close are we really to God? How do we treat our neighbours? What about truth and honesty? And what do we use our tongues to say about others? Drawing near to God is not about being self-righteous, but rather it is more about how we conduct our affairs and how we treat others. It is time for us to draw nearer to our God.
