Commentary: This may not carry well with some people of narrow minded mentalities, however I have utter the truth of my encounters here in Houston. Coming back to my birthplace from the entertainment center of the world, Los Angeles, I come back with the sincere intention to share to make a better music environment. Sad to say, I have encountered disdain and uncooperative spirit from some key musicians. No matter how cordial and communicative, I get disrespect and non communication from these avoiding individuals. Not applicable to all, I see racism still underlying in the relationship of African Americans and Caucasians in particular that still maintains a polarization among the music community. Guys, we are not enemies. We should pull together, not remain separate. When Blacks can provide the avenues of opportunities, Whites are there to seize the day. But when reversed it is seldom mutual. I have had younger musicians that have shared my knowledge in the early development of their musicianship, talk to me like Im the enemy. They welcome me in verbally, but dont align action to what is verbalized. They dont return calls. They hug you, but never call you. And some of these are individuals that African Americans feel as though must be a token in their bands in order to get quality work in Houston. Which is probably the sad reality of the South. When will things change? When you ask why it still exist, no one can provide an intelligent and clear answer. I say its ignorance. People are generally afraid of what they do not know. Lets communicate more effectively with positive frame of minds. How can our music community flurish, if were disregarding, deceptive, non communicative and ignorant towards each other. We are not enemies. Lets grow Houston together.
