It was great to hear the rejoicing and enthusiastic stories resounding around the clubhouse. The firsts won a thriller at home to St Kilda by 3 shots, with Billy Morton leading his four to a stirring 17 shot victory with some amazing bowls. Picking up a 5 and three 4s helped them on their way to winning the drinks for the day. Ray Costolloe Jr’s team picked up a 6 and a 5, and dropped a 7, in their 3 shot win. Importantly, they kept the Edithvale scoreboard ticking over as the match tightened up. Michael Cameron’s crew had a close match all day, and to their credit, only went down by a single shot. John O’Donnell’s four struggled against the highly ranked St Kilda coach, and conceded too many multiples in their 16 shot loss. Barb Overson’s four went on a 17-0 run in their 15 shot triumph, and the skip could do no wrong. Alan Cousens’s crew fought back from 2-13 to 16-17 with one end to go. Alan was holding three, when the opposition skip drove out his only bowl and left Alan with 6 shots and a five shot victory. Ian Thomas’ team led early, dropped a few 2s, but picked up a pair of 3s to only go down by 3 shots. Peter Bailey’s four were close early, dropped a 3 and a 4, got them back, and went down by 6 shots. Three of the four skippers took out double-figure wins. Bill Newman’s four jumped out to a 9-0 lead, and picked up a 5 later in their 15 shot win. Peter Howell’s crew dominated all day, winning 14 ends in their 14 shot win. Suzanne Webber’s team had a close match early, but then picked up a 7 and four 2s in their 12 shot victory. And to ensure maximum points, Ray Smith’s four withstood a late charge to hang on by a solitary shot. Kevin Breen’s team led 12-0 before giving up four 3s, but hung on for a 3 shot win. Bob Baird’s four led at the halfway point, but the opposition rallied and went on an 18-0 run, leaving Bob at minus 15.
