Comments from Wolfie one of the Te Moata Trustees after attending the Permaculture Design Certificate training at Te Moata in May. There will be another one in 2014 so spread the word. The Permaculture Design Certificate course was fantastic. From 9am through to 9pm for two weeks we covered a huge range of topics and information as well as doing lots of practical stuff outside. One of the highlights was building the cob wall at the top of the new garden area. Made from clay and paper mache with some cement, all smothered over bamboo and netting. Great fun. We also gained a lot of strategies to counter the effects of the carbon build up on the earth at the moment. It certainly made me think about using a lot less stuff and trying to buy things that have very little packaging. The amount of rubbish created monthly in Auckland is scary - enough to fill Eden Park 3 stories high. Half of this is organic material that could be composted or eaten by worms. The planning part of the course was fascinating - we looked at everything from a very small apartment space to large blocks of land over 1000 acres. The same principles apply whatever the size. The tutors, Trish and Daniel were awesome - their knowledge base is amazing and they share it all very humbly. I think everyone should take the course then we would really see some changes happening around the planet! We all got on really well doing the course together and permaculture is such a fit for Te Moata given that the key principles are Care for the Earth, Care for People, and Sharing Resources. I try to live in harmony with the planet but this course has stepped me up to a while new level.
