Committee to bridge HND/First Degree Dichotomy holds strategic meeting as Education Minister engages stakeholders to end ASUP/COEASU strike actions The Committee set up by the Supervising Minister of Education, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike to bridge the gap between Higher National Diploma and First Degree held a Strategic Meeting at the Conference Hall of the Federal Ministry of Education with key issues deliberated upon by all stakeholders on thursday. In attendance at the meeting chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education were representatives of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, National Board for Technical Education, National Commission for Colleges of Education, NCCE, National Universities Commission, Federal Ministry of Labour and the Director, Tertiary Education Department of the Federal Ministry of Education. The Committee which is charged with the responsibility of addressing one of the key demands of ASUP in the strike action embarked upon by the union is already working out the required framework to achieve this goal. The Supervising Minister of Education, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike is engaging the unions, stakeholders and the National Assembly to ensure that the strike actions by ASUP and the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union are resolved in the shortest possible time. The Minister noted that with the conclusion of work on the white paper on visitation panels which will be released shortly and the impending release of the reports of Needs Assessments Committees on Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, the unions will appreciate the Federal Government’s position and call off the strike in the interest of the nation. He assured Nigerians that the Federal Government will continue to work towards improving on the infrastructure and academic programmes of Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, adding that the welfare of staff of these institutions will remain a top priority of the administration.
