Common Core Standards: I am beginning to get more response from classroom teachers and other professional educators on Common Core Standards. Most school districts have invested a lot of time and effort in developing the implementation. The recent action by the State Legislature may not be in the best interest of school districts and the students. I sat in on one training session for a basic algebra course, and the emphasis was not on what was taught, but how it was taught. For professional educators, the emphasis is on implementation and compliance with standards. In contrast, the opposition has come from a distrust of and resistance to national standards, fear of content, and resistance to encouragement of critical thinking skills as differentiated from memorization. Some concern has come from parents who are not yet familiar with a more rigorous and challenging curriculum. I don’t think it changes the frequency of testing, but changes the standards to which students will be held accountable. It has the potential of remediation of regional and demographic inequity and is designed to prepare our students for college readiness. There is a public contradiction coming from those who have been the most critical of student performance and teacher competence, who have been the most vocal in opposition to the introduction to the concept of a more challenging standard.
