Common reasons pets are stolen 1. The most common victims of pet theft are purebred dogs. Their pedigree has street value that can fetch thousands of dollars with little effort from or expense to the dog napper. Stolen purebred dogs, especially toys, puppies, and designer breeds such as Labradoodles, are sold for half the asking price of a dog from a legitimate breeder. 2. Pets may be sold and shipped to puppy mills to be used for breeding (this is why it is essential to have your pet spayed or neutered). 3. Thieves may steal animals and wait for a sizable reward to be posted, then collect the money from unwittingly gracious guardians. 4. Stolen pets might be used as bait dogs to train fighting dogs. These breeds are commonly German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers and American Pit Bull Terriers. 5. Some people sell stolen and lost animals for research and veterinary institutions that use dogs and cats for testing and biomedical experimentation. These groups are often referred to as Class B dealers. They are brokers who acquire their animals through flea markets, newspaper adds, and other less savory sources. Wed like to add to this. There is a very big difference between a Missing dog and a stolen dog. Dogs do go Missing as they always have! It seems to be becoming very common that missing dogs are being posted as Stolen or Missing / Stolen. Around 90% of the dogs we are notified as of being stolen are found and reunited with their owners within days. This indicates that they were not stolen dogs to begin with. There is a HUGE difference between a missing or stolen dog! Very different actions are also taken in the case of a missing dog to that of a stolen dog, and the assistance from public can vary as well. It is always in the best interest of both dog and owner that they try and establish the most likely scenario before advertising as Stolen or Missing / Stolen. And of course if you are quite sure your dog has been stolen the first stop you should be making is the Police Station closest to you to file a report. Do not call - go in! paws.org/pet-theft.html
