Communications Fellow, Security Assistance Monitor, Washington DC Posted by Natalie Chwalisz on July 24, 2013 at 3:13pm in Job/Consulting OpportunitiesView Discussions The Center for International Policy seeks an energetic and self-motivated student or recent graduate interested in U.S. foreign policy, security assistance, human rights and communications for a short-term (8-10 weeks) communications fellowship. Position description The Communications Fellow will help with social media management and media outreach for the Security Assistance Monitor (SAM) program. In collaboration with FCNL, POMED, LAWG and WOLA, CIP’s SAM program seeks to oversee and understand the United States’ security and defense relationship with the world. An expansion of the existing Just the Facts project and database (justf.org), which tracks U.S. security assistance to Latin America and the Caribbean, the new Security Assistance website and database is set to launch in the fall. The Communications Fellow will work with CIP’s SAM team to develop and carry out its social media strategy, as well as help implement the press strategy surrounding the launch of the website. This is a great opportunity for someone interested in non-profit communications and features a high level of responsibility, opportunity for collaboration, and valuable hands-on experience The Communications Fellow’s primary responsibilities include: Highlighting news and current events about U.S. foreign policy, security assistance, and human rights on SAM’s Twitter and Facebook accounts; Maintaining SAM’s social media presence and tracking social media analytics; Working with the SAM coordinator to develop and carry out a press strategy surrounding the launch of the website, including drafting press releases, media advisories, and email blasts; Assisting with outreach to reporters and external bloggers. Qualifications Fellowship positions require a self-motivated, detail-oriented person with excellent writing, oral communication, and organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. The applicant must be an enthusiastic team player with a demonstrable interest in international affairs, U.S. security and defense assistance, and human rights who can capture current events and information into engaging content for our email lists and social media. Experience in the field of journalism or communications and familiarity with managing social media accounts is valued. In addition, the Communications Fellow should have a basic understanding of HTML; solid understanding of social media for nonprofit organizations; and interest in contributing to communications strategy. Knowledge of Drupal and leading new media strategies are a definite plus, as is proficiency in Arabic, French, Portuguese, and/or Spanish. Timeframe and Location The position is flexible and can be modified to fit a full-time or part-time schedule. This is a short-term position, which will begin as soon as possible and will end on September 30, 2013. While the fellow may be able to work occasionally from home, a majority of the fellow’s work will be based out of CIP’s offices in Washington DC. Compensation A full-time fellowship will be granted a stipend of $800 per month. A part-time fellowship will be prorated accordingly.
