Community Organizer Position - Detroit BSW+ Urban Neighborhood Initiatives, Inc. seeks a Community Safety Coordinator (CSC) to help advance comprehensive community development in Detroit’s Springwells Village neighborhood. This position will work to implement community safety initiatives at the grassroots level, identifying and developing neighborhood leaders for safety initiatives and bringing together a broad base of organizations, residents, businesses, and faith-based organizations to work collectively to address safety and quality of life issues. This position emphasizes coordination of community-based safety initiatives and is supported and advised by Detroit Local Initiatives Support Corporation. Start date: November 1, 2014. Salary range: $28,000-$35,000. About the Position: The Community Safety Coordinator will coordinate and support safety initiatives in Springwells, working in partnership with City agencies and community organizations to integrate the varied resources and tools of law enforcement, community mobilization, and economic development to make neighborhoods safer and more vital. The individual will be housed at the office of Urban Neighborhood Initiatives, Inc., but will spend a considerable amount of time in the Springwells community. The individual will report directly to the Sustainable Communities Project Manager in developing and implementing a work plan that builds off of the Springwells Village Quality of Life Plan. Specific responsibilities will include: · Convene community groups, police, prosecutors, and other key stakeholders to create new and/or strengthen existing results-oriented partnerships around shared public safety goals in specific neighborhoods. This includes: o Hosting one community safety forum for the community o Facilitating a minimum of six monthly community safety education opportunities for the community with surveys to follow. o Plan and host with community partners at least four community beautification projects to address neighborhood blight · Collaboratively develop and implement specific, dynamic plans to resolve identified crime problems, provide coordination services to all partners including meeting planning and facilitation, document decisions/work plans to encourage lateral accountability, and troubleshoot partnership challenges. A minimum of two high crime areas or properties, known as “hot spots”, will be targeted for intensive crime reduction strategies/efforts and redevelopment when feasible. · Support the continued development and implementation of aspects of LISC’s Sustainable Communities Springwells Village Quality of Life Plan activities that contribute to crime prevention and intervention. · Work with new and existing block clubs and neighborhood patrols to recruit volunteers to the safety efforts. · Collect information from community members regarding crime and safety issues and social issues that may be an underlying issue for certain crimes. · Promote high levels of resident participation and leadership in community activities related to safety, assisting in the development and coordination of volunteer service opportunities. · Coordinate community-based responses to issues including working with individual and local organizations and experts to determine how best to respond, incorporating residents, police, community organizations, city officials and/or others as needed. · Document programming efforts and outcomes to LISC which include the following activities: o Convening law enforcement and community partners o Supporting the community safety Problem Solving Team (a.k.a. Safety Equipo) consisting of Congress of Communities’ Community Safety Coordinator, AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program members, a representative from District 6 Councilmember’s office, LISC Building Sustainable Communities (BSC) Convening Agency staff, community development partner(s), law enforcement and residents o Leading the Problem Solving Team in creating work plans to address specific crime problems and shepherding implementation o Communicating successes (and challenges) through social and mainstream media o Implementing crime prevention tools, especially developing lines of reporting that residents trust o Facilitating monthly community safety education for the community, including attending monthly meetings and distributing safety information and planning safety education events around particular issues based on hotspot crimes o Assisting in the continued linkage of physical environment enhancements with crime reduction and improved public safety successfully transforming “hotspots” of crime into useful and productive safe spaces · Monitor the safety needs and concerns of the residents and facilitate responsive solutions including providing access and referrals to resources and disseminating information effectively to community Help establish trust in community and facilitate crime reporting depending on need of resident or community group. · Attend monthly community meetings in Southwest Detroit. Attend monthly meetings with the LISC Program Officer. Attend monthly meetings with the other LISC supported Community Safety Coordinators. Qualifications: · Bachelor’s Degree or 3-4 years of equivalent work experience required. Advanced degree in urban planning, criminal justice, public/business administration, public policy or a related field is preferred. 2-4 years of demonstrated experience in related fields and experience in urban community organizing preferred. Equivalent experience and/or education will be evaluated on an individual basis. · Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong facilitative and adaptive leadership skills. Strong interpersonal skills in working with a wide variety of people and organizations. Ability to promote consensus about strategies, plans and specific actions among diverse stakeholders. Ability to make informed decisions and with consideration of other stakeholders and residents involved. Experience as a technical assistance provider is desired. · Able to identify and solve problems. Able to work with groups and individuals to reach a decision together. · Experience working with people of diverse cultural backgrounds and income levels. · Flexibility in schedule to attend community meetings, some evening and weekend work will be required. · Bilingual, fluent in English and Spanish (Required) · Able to work independently and part of a team · Strong computer skills: Excel, Word and PowerPoint skills are desirable. · Ability to do some outdoor work involving considerable walking and neighborhood restoration work (e.g., leading community volunteer team-building activities). · Reliable transportation.
