Compatibility between spouses is a must. The Sahaabah were the best Muslims ever in terms of belief, practice and character, yet they also had divorces due to lack of compatibility. So what about us? We lack in Deen and character. Add to that lack of compatibility with our spouses and its a disaster in the making! Something that I see often is a brother/sister who came from very rough situations marrying someone who didnt face anything close to their misfortunes. It doesnt take too long for that brother/sister to realize that his/her spouse lacks the understanding and ability to connect with him/her. Eventually this lack of connection between them takes them apart from each other until the marriage is damaged beyond repair. If you are brother who had a rough past or a sister who had a rough past (such as abusive previous marriage or child hood), please double check that your potential spouse truly understands it. Do not hurt yourself even more by choosing to marry someone who will not understand you, regardless of how religious he/she may seem.
