Concern for the safety of the president’s family amid an increase in rape, and the likelihood of an earthquake in Nkandla are among the reasons for the upgrades costing more than R200 million to President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla home. This is according to a report of Parliament’s joint standing committee on intelligence, Beeld reported today. The report mentions one earthquake in 50 years that registered between five and six on the Richter Scale. The newspaper also reported that one of the biggest beneficiaries of state spending on upgrades to Zuma’s Nkandla home was not appointed by tender but by the president himself. Durban-based Minenhle Makhanya Architects, which earned more than R18 million from the Nkandla upgrades, was already appointed to renovate Zuma’s family homes in 2008, before he was president. Neither the architects nor presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj responded to the paper’s questions. In November last year, City Press reported that an industry architect had said the R18.6 million paid to Minenhle Makhanya Architects seemed inflated.
