Concerning Violence is brought to us by Swedish director Göran Hugo Olsson, maker of the stunning The Black Power Mixtape, who returns again to the archives to create an unsettling, intelligent and overwhelming film, this time about the African liberation struggles of the ’60s and ’70s. The narration is by ex-Fugee Lauryn Hill, drawn from psychologist/philosopher Frantz Fanon’s seminal anticolonial text, The Wretched of the Earth, powers the film as it surveys the aggression of colonial power and the brutal, chaotic violence required to defeat it.
