Concerning punishment of slaves, the only Great-grandmother of - TopicsExpress

Concerning punishment of slaves, the only Great-grandmother of mine to live into her nineties, told me about her father, who was freed at the age of eight. When she was a girl he took her to his old plantation and gave her a tour, showing her the punishment barn which had contained implements of punishment or torture, depending upon your perspective. There were various shackles used to restrain either on the floor, standing, or suspended upside down. She said she saw branding irons. There was even a stump in front of the barn where limbs were chopped off. The punishment barn was also the domain of the plantation blacksmith; in this case, a white man. Upon his emancipation, my Great-great-grandfather walked away barefoot. I could say more, but theres not enough space.
