Condolences to the Williams family.... Tucker rest in peace.......... There surely has never been a more appropriate award given out than the Irene McCauley Memorial Award presented to Tucker Williams at a lacrosse tournament in Brampton earlier this month. Given to a player who displays courage, strength, faith, loyalty and passion for the game of lacrosse, the award found the perfect home. Buoyed by the indelible spirit of eight-year-old Tucker, who is battling Burkitt’s lymphoma, the entire family is displaying all of those traits right now. Tucker’s illness has inspired incredible kindness in people everywhere, especially the lacrosse community, where his dad, Shawn, is one of the most well-known, respected and liked players in the world. Upon being diagnosed with the disease early in the new year and following surgery to remove a tumour in the throat area, Tucker asked if he could have a bag of potato chips, prompting a nurse to dub him “braver than brave.” The phrase not only stuck, but led to a website and Facebook page, has trended on Twitter, is prominent on T-shirts and caps and has inspired several fundraisers to help the family deal with the burdens of a lengthy illness. Just a month ago, Tucker’s disease was in remission, and the hope was in a year he would be declared free and cured. Sadly, it has returned and spread, sending Tucker back to the hospital for chemotherapy and months more of treatment. The family remains strong in the face of the devastating news, and Tucker continues to display his trademark spunk and optimism. At the Brampton tournament, despite being kept out of a few games due to fatigue and nausea, thought at the time to be a virus, Tucker returned to play in the Tyke A championship game and scored three goals in a 4-1 win. Following the diagnosis and after subsequent testing and treatment, when he was finally allowed to eat, Tucker requested a 12-ounce steak, according to his mother, Tamara, in an e-mail sent out to family and friends this week. “He always has a way of putting us at ease,” she wrote. He is indeed braver than brave.
