Confession #863 """The underdogs"" part 1 "(This story has been edited and modified for reading purposes only and for the safety of the identity of the involved individuals but the story remains the same. This story does not imply anything to any other colleges just a story of how 2 individuals stood against that notion I hope this story will be taken as an inspiration and not a source of criticism. The lessons we learned in our experience will be our lifetime gift and I want to share it to you my fellow msuans) Our college is always referred to as no pens but full of make ups. But some people beg to disagree. And it all started when: My sister was totally supportive of my studies and interests but she has this one crazy favor she wanted me to join an organization that basically burns your brains out and totally let your wits ran out. Being my benefactor and all, I was not in the place to refuse, although I was not seen as an academic type of person and mostly visible in the crowd where music plays, I was forced to join the club. So there I was cuing to myself to the line where applicants are being screened. They kept asking questions after questions and made most of the applicants scratch their heads. when it was my turn to be screened I was able to answer the questions that was threw at me though I did not find it easy but I was able to cope up with them, screening after screening till only a few of us left. Then we practice everyday in front of the college where we were screened. So I was accepted to be an applicant. But one of the requirements is to join one of the literary competitions during intramurals. Sad to say I was the only applicant from our college and I need to have a team to represent our college. So I tried to search for my own team. Each team should have 2 to 3 members. Luckily I found one and I found him the night before the competition (no time to prep and no time to read). So given the circumstances he was confident enough to join me (thank God he did). So we just talked that night saying that our main goal is just to participate and nothing more and exchanged numbers. (The first round) So there we were with all the others yapping and blabbing of this and of that and we just knew that we have to be there. So we had our first round. We just had our prep time to discuss on what we have to say but basically have no idea how we are going to play. So the first round became our practice on how we handle the game. And we have lost.....ouch! (Second round) So we talked and laughed how we got lost so the deal was to have the first speaker play if he knows what the issue was, that was the game plan. So disregarding the loss we had we again took a dip in the game again. I was the one who spoke first in the team because I know the issue. And he backed me up well. We fought and lashed them with all that we have for the issue at hand we bent and made our argument as valid as it can be. Our team was able to dodge the bullets that was fired against us and gave them what we know is best for the entire round. I was the last speaker then and I was able to give all the needed rebuttals and closed it with a conviction that all 3 rounds were ours. But of course we have to wait for the verdict and it will take a few minutes for them to convene and decide who won the game, so we waited but still we are so relaxed not because we are confident but basically we are having fun with the game no pressures and no hassles with each other, so while waiting we chatted on how we both performed we evaluated each others performance well (it was just like lifting each others chair to boost our confidence) but we find our duo “ a great tandem “ well just for us though. And so the verdict came and we won, our first victory was the sweetest. But for others they just made a comment that the issue was an easy win for us knowing that we are from Spoon and Fork College and less brain more glamour. (Third round) Having a tough opponents and others happened to be my co applicants in the organization and I know the others who happens to be scholars and all, it’s just not easy to feel like an under dog in the game, 1 win will not guarantee that the next round and all the other rounds will be ours. So it’s not yet time to celebrate. Plus the adding stares of the other colleges who dominate the game. Ah! I felt so little but its ok it is what I expected them to see our team knowing that it is the kind of reputation they see in us. So came the this round where I don’t know the issue and he gladly educated me and since he was the first to speak he made a full proof argument and made me able to back it up and made counter attacks to the argument we for see they will be throwing at us. Having that start we were not wrong about how we anticipated the game strategy of the opponent. Luckily what we have in hand during our prep time was the things that are what we exactly need for the game. But they did not made it easy for us the fight was a close one but because of my team mate who played the opening and the closing so well it made our chances our winning bigger. Again waiting for the verdict to come out, we felt a bit chill, feels like the realization that what we are in to is a game and it is starting to run in our senses that we are driven to win so waiting for the result made us a bit nervous this time. And thank God again the round was ours. So we had 2 wins already. so before the fourth round (the silent round) came some people started to notice our improvement people who witnessed how we played the game started to notice our potential but it was a slight notice and the only support that we have that time is just the 2 of us but still we got noticed. As expected the dominating college is still on top we still get the under dog stares and mixed kind of reactions especially to me (not because I wrote this but because I was known to be good in a different field but not in this game never did they expect to see me.) but we did not care we are just thrilled that we had two and kept saying at least we had two out of four rounds not bad we say… (The fourth round – silent round) So since this is the fourth round we said our good byes before the start of the game we he wished me well for my application and I was asking him to apply too since he is a very good player but he declined. And we just said tomorrow its over and tonight we can sleep well. We are so happy and contented with our 2 precious wins out of 4 but the fourth one isn’t played yet. So the game started, time to prep and discuss our last strategy for the day. So given that this is the last game and looking forward for a good night sleep and a full day rest the next day we decided to play hard if it’s the last then lets make our best efforts in this one. So the game started and unfortunately I was the first speaker and the last and him in the middle. So same game plan we anticipate and we create arguments based on our anticipation of the opponents argument will be. So I did my part in the my opening I blasted this and that pointed out this and that making my argument valid and solid but the opponents argument is strong and feels like they have smashed parts of my argument but still we stood firmly on our saying that we deserve to win this round. My team mate was able to support my arguments and he was able to make it stronger and smashed some of the opponent’s structure to favor my closing and rebuttals so when it was my turn to play again I was able to make it all clear stable and full proof so as we think it is. So we ended up so stressed with the last one because we just gave all of it. And knowing it was a silent round the verdict was not announced. We have to wait for tomorrow to know who is going to play for the semis but we don’t care for it anymore all we know is that tomorrow is our rest day. All we can think of is food and bed and nothing more. As we were walking away towards the convening room a friend came rushing and leaked some story to us before we left. She broke the news to us. Saying that the last round was ours and we were like what!? Astonished and we couldn’t believe that we had a bonus point and that made our team 3 wins and 1 loss wow not bad we say. But news flash! We are also qualified for the quarter finals! Another what the *%$# so our rest and the full day rest is gone that’s the first thing that came out feels like we have to work again the next day and we felt so drain for the day’s event already. We don’t know what lies ahead so we just said “quarters? Hmmm not bad! “…. So then the next day came and we headed to the venue for the quarter finals round the atmosphere feels so different people started to look at us as if someone who can level with all the others in the room we get smiles and greetings unlike the other day and casual congratulations from others. The feeling was uplifting we felt like we boosted the name of our college and we feel like we have given the best for our college that time since we were known as passive in this kind of event but we have made it this far and we felt so contented already.
