Confusion Over Allocation of Displaced Mindolo Plots in Kitwe Some tenants who were occupying houses which the Kitwe City Council demolished in Mindolo North have not benefited from the plots the council had offered the displaced locals. One of the residents who owned a house the council demolished has lashed out at the local authority for just going ahead to give out plots without looking at who the genuine beneficiaries were. He complained that his tenant went ahead to register her name when the houses were demolished without telling him. “Things are bad for me; the woman who was in my house registered her name as though it was her house and the council has given her a letter of offer and she is getting that plot,” the visibly angry resident said. “The council should have gone further to establish who the genuine beneficiaries were and not just giving anyone including those who were just renting,” he added. Asked if he was not aware that he was supposed to register his name through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unity DMMU, the alleged owner expressed ignorance “I had no idea they will be given plots.” Meanwhile, Kitwe Mayor Kelvin Sinyangwe has distanced himself from people accusing the local authority of not scruitnizing the beneficiaries. “That’s not our job, all we did is got the list from Red Cross and DMMU and gave out the letter of offers, so those people am sorry there is no way we can come in,” Sinyangwe said. The Mindolo North residents have been given a 30-day ultmatum to pay the K 3,000 service charge to validate their plots. And all the residents who had settled at the Transit Camp behind Helen Kaunda have been relocated to their new place. A check at the Transit camp revealed that all the residents had moved out. “They have all gone, they just started moving when the council offered the plots,” a neighbour said. The Kitwe City Council Recently issued 200 plots to the people who’s houses where demolished after they were built on illegal land belonging to Phoenix Materials, Mopani Copper Mines and the Kitwe City Council. zambiareports/2014/10/17/confusion-allocation-displaced-mindolo-plots-kitwe/
