Congrats to Geek of the Week Peggy Lemone! Senior Scientist Emerita, Natl Center for Atmospheric Research Shes also an AMS & AAAS Fellow, and 2010 AMS President Favorite type of weather: A tough one. Severe thunderstorms lured me into weather. Lightning striking our house when I was in the third grade literally sparked my interest in meteorology. I know it was a Monday night, since the my Tuesday row had Show and Tell the next day l, and I took bricks knocked out of our chimney and splinters from our roof to show to the class (I remember them being about 2 inches long and a half inch wide or maybe slightly smaller -- and many or most were not charred), along with shreds of the lawn furniture we had on our deck -- guess they were shredded by bricks either falling or blown outward by the lightning-induced explosion). And I used to chase storms before there were crowds doing it -- in 1970 in Oklahoma, we only ran into one other storm-chase car the whole summer). But today, with traffic jams around storms, I might opt more for a sky covered with cirrus and great optics (haloes, etc.). Still enjoy a good storm though. Favorite non-weather hobby: Invertebrate Paleontology, with birding a close second. So we go out to the middle of nowhere, hunt for fossils, watch the birds nearby (seeing birds deemed unusual in the process, since most birders dont go where we go), and of course watch the clouds. I have some great Cb shots from the badlands west of Casper, Wyoming, for example.
