A winner of four of 10 starts, Separate Interest was second in the Golden State Million Futurity(G1) and fourth in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity(G1) last year. Michael Casselman conditions Separate Interest for the Estate of Kim Kessinger. Eaves Horses Family Limited Partnership bred the gray colt in Texas from the First Down Dash mare A Delightful Legacy. Eduardo Nicasio had the riding assignment. “He faced some nice in the derby trials and he was unlucky not to qualify to the All American Derby,” Casselman said. “He had the 11th fastest qualifying time in a trial that had a head wind. We think he’s one of the best horses in the nation.” Kim’s wife, Lila Kessinger, was in the winner’s circle to accept the trophy following the Town Policy. “Seperate Interest is a special horse and he has a very special owner,” Casselman said. “With an angel watching over him,” added Lila referring to her husband, the late Kim Kessinger. “We have some decisions to make,” Casselman said. “We might run him in the Z. Wayne Griffin Directors Trials to get him in the Champion of Champions. After his All American trial we brought him back here, but he got dinged up coming back. We thought about the Go Man Go, but he needed a little more time after arriving here. (Nicasio) said that they had him beat at the gap tonight, but then he took off. Eduardo really likes him at the 440-yard distance. We like him a lot as well. He’s just a nice horse to be around.” Howard Nichols Jess Being Valiant earned $5,625 for second. Jaime Gomez saddled the Valiant Hero colt out of Jess sass Me, by Mr Jess Perry. The winner of last years Golden State Million Juvenile is winless in four starts this season but has compiled a 3-4-0 record in two seasons and earned $121,273. Ridden by Francisco Rubio, the bay colt was bred in Utah by Lance Robinson and Max Anderson. Making his first start since winning the richest All American Derby(G1) in history, Feature Hero broke in at the start and lugged in under jockey Jimmy Brooks to finish third in his West Coast debut. The $1.3 million earner owned by Reliance Ranches, LLC and trained by Eddie D. Willis is expected to start in the $750,000 Champion of Champions(G1) in December. Lana Merrick and Kent Jackson bred the Valiant Hero gelding in Oklahoma from the Feature Mr Jess mare Illegal Feature. Completing the field were Look Whos Running, Pj Chick In Black and One Fancy Eagle. Boogies Bullet was scratched.
