Congratulations Mr. Elbaum! Stevenson High School’s David Elbaum has been named the 2014 Illinois History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, HISTORY, and Preserve America. Elbaum, 32, is in his eighth year of teaching at Stevenson, and his 11th year overall. The Deerfield High School graduate taught at Aptakisic Junior High School in Buffalo Grove for three years before joining Stevenson. As a state winner, Elbaum becomes a finalist for the National History Teacher of the Year Award, which will be announced this fall. The Illinois State Board of Education and Gilder Lehrman will honor Elbaum during the Illinois Council of Social Studies annual conference at Harper College in Palatine on October 17. He also will receive a $1,000 award, and an archive of books and historical resources will be presented in his name to Stevenson’s Information and Learning Center. More: ow.ly/xpk8q
